ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head women's tennis coach Ronni Bernstein announced Wednesday (Oct. 8) that senior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) has been elected captain by a vote of her teammates. Howard served as a co-captain last season with former teammate Allie Shafner (2005-08).
"Lindsey has always been 100 percent committed to this team and wants what is best for the group above her personal goals," said Bernstein. "She has great character and will be a strong leader again this year. I am happy with this selection as we move forward as a team and attempt to reach even higher. I feel confident that with Lindsey's leadership our team will work extremely hard to reach all of our goals this year."
Howard is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-timeITA Scholar-Athlete. She is also a three-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award winner. Last season Howard posted a 21-11 overall singles record that included a 16-7 dual-match record. She went 8-2 in Big Ten action and helped the Wolverines advance to the second round of the NCAAChampionship with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Furman's Natasa Manojilovic. Howard holds career records of 33-23 in singles and 51-29 in doubles.
"I'm really excited and honored to be voted captain by my teammates for the second time," said Howard. "It's going to be a challenge doing it by myself this year, but I'm looking forward to helping the team accomplish our goals."
Howard has started the fall season strong, going a combined 5-0 in singles and doubles in Michigan's season-opening tournament in San Diego last weekend.
The Wolverines will close out the fall campaign at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships (Oct. 23-28) andThunderbird Invitational (Nov. 7-9). The 2009 portion of the schedule will begin with U-M hosting the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 17-19) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
