ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 on Sunday (Oct. 5) at Yost Ice Arena to cap off this season's exhibition schedule. Carl Hagelin(Sodertalje, Sweden) registered a goal and an assist in the winning effort, and eight other Wolverines chipped in a point during the contest.
Hagelin lit the lamp at 4:34 in the opening period, putting U-M on top 1-0. Chad Langlais(Spokane, Wash.) crossed the puck to Greg Pateryn(Sterling Heights, Mich.) at the top of the right faceoff circle where he one-timed it through traffic towards the goal. Hagelin recovered the shot just outside the crease and spun around Waterloo netminder Ryan Mior to wrist the puck into the left corner.
At 17:53, U-M went up 2-0 with a power-play goal from Louie Caporusso(Woodbridge, Ont.). Scooter Vaughan(Placentia, Calif.) carried the puck up the right side and slid it to Hagelin at center ice. Hagelin brought the puck into the zone and passed it to Caporusso who dodged in and out of the Waterloo blueliners from the high slot and took a shot that ricocheted off the right post. Luckily for the Wolverines, Caporusso recovered the deflection and pushed it across for the score.
The Warriors had a scoring opportunity at 8:28 in the middle stanza on a two-on-one breakaway, but U-M goaltender Bryan Hogan(Highland, Mich.) made an excellent save to keep the opponents at bay. Hogan stepped outside the crease and dropped down to make a butterfly save, keeping U-M up 2-0.
Neither team scored in the second frame, but Michigan outshot the Warriors 8-3 during the period.
Waterloo eventually answered the Maize and Blue in the final frame with a marker at 5:04 from Kyle Schwende when he stood at the right post and slid the puck past Hogan to make the score 2-1. Doug Spooner was credited with the assist.
Less than two minutes later, Michigan retaliated with a power-play tally from Steve Kampfer(Jackson, Mich.) at 6:58. Chris Summers(Milan, Mich.) jump-started the play by dragging the puck behind the net and dishing it to Aaron Palushaj(Northville, Mich.) at the goal line. Palushaj then crossed the puck in front of the net to Kampfer near the right post where he hammered it past Mior to make the score 3-1.
Michigan kicks off its regular season next Friday (Oct. 10) at 7:35 p.m. vs. St. Lawrence at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game today... "There were things in both games this weekend that we liked about the team and things that we didn't like. I thought today we showed more breakdowns and turnovers. Last night, our faceoffs were a little better. Our power play maybe wasn't as good. We got away with the penalty killing, but there were still too many penalties for us to have to kill. You would like your power play to be able to take advantage of the man-advantage. We got one, but we had the chance on the five-minute major to really take the team out of the game, and we were not able to do that, but we'll get better. I liked our goaltending. I thought both goalies made big saves [this weekend]. This was a tougher game to play tonight. I think our team underestimated Waterloo, and they were a tough hockey team. I thought they broke us down too many times. But you have to play these games and get game intensity and game preparation. Our preparation was probably not what it had to be tonight. But when you're on this campus on a football weekend and you have to prepare for something else, it's tough to avoid all the hoopla and all the activities. These young kids have to go through that and that's good."
On the lineup changes today... "We skated an extra forward, and I wanted everybody to get game minutes this weekend. I think we were able to do that. It's good to get [Eric] Elmblad in; it was good to get Anthony Ciraulo in and Luke Glendening. I hadn't seen [Glendening] play, even after we recruited him, so it was good to see him play and see his game. Overall, I think everybody got a good shot, and now we'll start to put our team together for next weekend."
On if the plan is to split the goaltending duties between Billy Sauer and Bryan Hogan... "Right now I would say yes. That might be week to week or we may make a decision to go month to month, but right now I'd like to see each of them in a game-night situation. Billy Sauer has the experience but needs the experience [too]. [Goaltending coach] Josh Blackburn is my barometer. He works with them on the ice and will give me an idea on if they're both ready to help us win. That's what it really comes down to. If there is one that is better than the other we're going to play the number one, but if they're both playing well then we might be able to play both of them."
