EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team fell in the third round of the singles main draw this afternoon (Sunday, Oct. 26) at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Facility.
Mahtani, who rolled off two wins on Saturday (Oct. 25) to reach the third round, fell to Illinois' Chelcie Abajian, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to close action at the regional championship. Mahtani was down a set early and rallied to even the match with a 6-4 win in the second set, but Abajian found her stride and moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-1 third-set win.
U-M posted seven singles wins for the tournament, highlighted by the play of freshman Michelle Sulahian(Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell HS), who posted two wins in singles-qualifying action, and Mahtani, who reached the third round of the singles main draw.
In doubles action, Michigan had three teams pick up wins in the tournament. The duo of senior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) and sophomore Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) along with tandem of Mahtani and sophomore Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) each advanced to the doubles main draw third round.
The Wolverines will take some time off before concluding the fall season at the Arizona State Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday, Nov. 7-9. U-M opens the spring season Jan. 17-19 when it hosts the Michigan Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center.
