Severin Leads Wolverines at EMU Classic

DEXTER, Mich. -- Battling cold and soggy conditions, junior/sophomore Rachel Severin(Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) of the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team finished first at the EMU Classic on Friday afternoon (Oct. 24) at the Hudson Mills Metropark. In the final regular-season meet for U-M, Severin crossed the line in 18:00.
The Wolverine harriers stayed near the front of the field right from the start and Severin, running on her former high school home course, made a move on the field just past the two-mile mark. With no response from any other runner, Severin coasted home to victory by 18 seconds.
Freshman Mary Grace Pellegrini(Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) was second in 18:18, leading five additional Maize and Blue runners in the top 10. Also recording top-10 finishes were sophomore/freshman Amanda McKenzie (Dexter, Mich./Chelsea) (5th, 18:27), sophomore/freshman Alysha Valencia(Lawrence, Kan./Free State) (6th, 18:55) and sophomore/freshman Alice Lehman(Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) (8th, 19:03).
Another Wolverine, freshman Lindsay Hagan(Novi, Mich./Northville), took ninth in 19:07, running unattached.
Senior/junior Alison Nesbitt(Essexville, Mich./Garber) and freshman Lindsey Gakenheimer(Monroe, Mich./Monroe) also registered top-20 finishes for the Maize and Blue. Nesbitt took 11th in 19:09, while Gakenheimer took 18th in 19:26.
Michigan will next be in action on Sunday, Nov. 2, to host the Big Ten Championships at the U-M Golf Course. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m.
