LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 34-ranked Kentucky Sunday morning (Jan. 27) at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. The Wolverines (0-2) fell just shy of claiming the doubles point to begin the match, and the Wildcats went on to claim all six in the singles competition to wrap up the team victory.
Junior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and sophomore Tania Mahtani's (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) first career win together proved to be crucial, as their 8-5 upset over Kentucky's No. 20-ranked pair of Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston at No. 1 evened up the doubles competition after the Wildcats posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 to start the day.
Michigan came within a few points of taking the first team point, as junior Lindsey Howard (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) and freshman Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) dropped a 9-8(4) decision to Whitney Spencer and Alaina Trgovich at No. 3.
Straight-set victories at the top three singles positions gave Kentucky the team win. Mahtani, Muresan and freshman Kari Wig(Cochrane, Alberta/Cochrane HS) all went to three sets before falling.
The Wolverines return to action on Thursday (Jan. 31) when they welcome Notre Dame to the Varsity Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. match.
