ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's swimming and diving incoming freshman Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson HS) has decided to defer his enrollment until the fall of 2008 in order to prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
"I completely support Dan's decision to defer a year and stay at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club," said head coach Bob Bowman. "I didn't feel like it would be good for his Olympic preparation to change training situations twice in one year. So he will be able to stay in one location and get the very top-level training that he'll need for Beijing."
Madwed, who swims for Bowman's former club team, the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, represented the United States at the 2007 World University Games, where he won the bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly. He also represented the USA at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships and was the 2006 U.S. Swimming Spring Nationals' 200-meter butterfly champion.
"The great part about Dan deferring is that he will receive one year of great training and gain a massive amount of experience to bring with him next year," said Bowman, "so that makes us feel very good. We're sure that he's going to be a big part of Michigan swimming and will help us reach our goals."
Madwed will join the Wolverines in 2008 after swimming for coach Paul Yetter at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. He is currently the third-ranked American in the 200-meter butterfly.
