Wolverines Compete at Visa Championships

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Junior Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucster Catholic) and sophomore Mel Santander(Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team competed during the first day of the Visa Championships Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the HP Pavilion.
Catrambone finished the first day ranked 19th in the all-around with a score of 82.650, while Santander placed 22nd with a tally of 82.000. Neither of the gymnasts, who competed with the senior group, qualified for the second day of competition as they did not rank in the top 36 competitors.
A trio of Michigan alumnae also competed on day one of the event. Justin Laury scored an 85.550 to place 10th, Andrew Elkind recorded an 85.200 to place 11th, and Geoff Corrigan ended the day in 13th place with an 84.950. All three athletes qualified for the second day of competition.
On day two, Laury finished in eighth place with a two-day combined score of 172.250, Elkind came in 11th place with a combined score of 170.350 and Corrigan's 170.050 placed him 12th.
Both Laury and Elkind earned their highest place on the high bar. Laury received a 13.850 on day one and a 14.000 day two, while Elkind scored a 14.150 the first day and and 13.700 the second day. They tied for eleventh place on the bar, both combining for a two-day score of 27.850. Corrigan's highest score came on the parallel bars, earning a 14.950 on the first day and a 15.100 the second day to put him in sixth place (30.050).
None of the gymnasts were among the six selected to represent the United States at the World Championships, the qualifiying event for the Olympic Games.
