Navas Takes Singles Crown at ITA Summer Circuit Event

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team captured the singles championship during the second leg of the 2007 ITA Midwest Summer Circuit, which Ohio State University hosted this past Saturday through Tuesday (July 14-17) at the Stickney Tennis Center. Navas led a contingent of six Wolverines that posted a combined singles record of 22-5 during the four-day event. Four U-M players advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tournament; the semifinals featured three Wolverines, and it was an all Maize and Blue title match that pitted Navas against classmate Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School).
Navas, the No. 2 seed in the 64-player draw, posted a perfect 6-0 record en route to the singles title. His championship run included a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal victory over Michigan teammate Matt Parks(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) before a tight 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 win in the finals over top-seeded Sroczynski.
It marked the second straight week that Navas and Sroczynski met in the championship match of the ITA Midwest Summer Circuit. Sroczynski earned a 7-6(5), 6-4 triumph over Navas to claim the title during the first leg of the circuit, which U-M hosted July 7-9 at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Parks posted a solid 4-1 record en route to the semifinals, including super-tiebreaker victories in both the third and quarterfinal rounds. Freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) won three straight matches before bowing out to Sroczynski in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-4).
Juniors Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Mike DePietro(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS), who both reached the third round in singles, teamed together to win the 32-team doubles competition. The second-seeded Wolverine tandem put together three convincing victories before knocking off Ohio State's Matt Allare and Dominic Ozanne in a tiebreaker to capture the championship.
