
Three Wolverines Qualify for Visa U.S. Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Sophomore Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS), senior/junior co-captain Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East HS) and freshman Mel Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional HS) of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team recently qualified for the Visa U.S. Championships at the 2007 U.S. Men's Qualifier at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Despite not being able make it past the first round of competition at the qualifier, fifth-year senior co-captain Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) was prequalified for the U.S. Championships with a seventh-place finish in the all-around at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Freshman Torrance Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS), sophomore Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney HS) and fomer Wolverines Geoffrey Corrigan (2002-05) and Edward Umphrey (2002-05) also represented the Maize and Blue at the qualifier.
Catrambone posted the best finish for U-M, taking third in the horizontal bars with a 27.900. Elkind led the Maize and Blue with the most top-eight finishes, placing seventh on the parallel bars (29.400) and eighth on the still rings (29.500). Santander was the only Wolverine to qualify in the all-around, tallying 81.400 points to take 18th place.
The 2007 Visa Championships are scheduled for Aug. 15-18 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Scores from the U.S. Men's Qualifier also will count toward team selection for the Pan American Games and World University Games.
