PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's gymnastics senior/junior co-captain Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East HS), who claimed the parallel bars and high bar titles against No. 5 Stanford, earned Big Ten co-Gymnast of the Week along with Illinois' Tyler Yamauchi, the conference office announced Wednesday (March 7).
Elkind
This is the first time Elkind has received the award, and he is the first Wolverine to win the accolade since fifth-year senior co-captain Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) claimed the honor on Jan. 26, 2005.
The No. 1-ranked Wolverines remained undefeated in dual meets (5-0) with their 212.350-208.100 victory at No. 5 Stanford last Friday (March 2) in Palo Alto, Calif. Elkind posted the meet's highest score (9.700) in winning the parallel bars and placed first on the high bar with a 9.250. He missed his personal best in each event by 0.100.
This season Elkind has won seven event titles, with three on p-bars, three on high bar and one on still rings. The Cherry Hill, N.J., native is ranked No. 1 in the nation on p-bars, No. 3 on high bar and No. 8 on still rings.
Elkind and the Wolverines return home to host Illinois Saturday (March 10) in U-M's final home meet of the season. Action begins at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
