Michigan Wins Neutral-Site Match Against Hawaii

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan mens tennis team improved to 8-2 on the season after earning a 4-3 victory over No. 75-ranked Hawaii Thursday afternoon (March 1) at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The Wolverines were in control of the match from the outset, claiming the doubles point and wins in the first three singles matches completed to clinch the team triumph. The Rainbow Warriors (2-5) recorded super-tiebreaker victories in the remaining singles matches for their three team points.
Freshmen George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) continued their spectacular play together, posting an 8-6 decision over Brent Hunter and Derrick Lajola at No. 2 doubles to give Michigan the early edge. Navas and Sroczynski are 6-2 against dual match opposition and 8-2 overall in 2006-07.
Sophomores Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) returned to the doubles lineup for the first time in a month, defeating Chad Faulk and Jeff Fitch by a score of 8-4 at No. 3 to clinch the first team point for the Maize and Blue. Aarts and Bruckmann remain perfect in dual match play at 3-0.
Michigans No. 3-ranked doubles team of senior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and junior Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Sascha Heinemann and Andreas Weber at No. 1. Hung and Maravic improve to 17-3 overall and 9-1 in dual match action.
In his first singles match since Feb. 3, Aarts earned a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hunter at No. 6 to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead in the match. Senior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) then put U-M in the drivers seat with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Lajola at No. 3. Heller is 6-2 in dual match play, including a 5-1 mark at the third position.
Sophomore Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) clinched the team win for Michigan thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win over 6-4, 6-2 Faulk at No. 4. Mazlin holds a team-best 7-2 record in dual match action.
Hawaii closed out the match with super-tiebreaker victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 5.
The Wolverines return to the Hilton Waikoloa Village Friday (March 2) for a 10 a.m. HST match against Texas A&M.
