Patton Earns Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Award

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Matt Patton(Matthews, N.C./Butler HS), of the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week Tuesday (Dec. 4) for his performance at the Husky Invitational (Nov. 29-1) in Federal Way, Wash.
Patton racked up three individual first-place finishes and participated on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay squad in the Michigan victory. The relay team posted a NCAA 'B' time of 6:30.31 to capture the event title.
Patton recorded two NCAA 'A' times in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles, touching the wall at 4:16.23 and 14:49.09, respectively. His winning of the 200-yard freestyle was good enough for a NCAA 'B' consideration time of 1:36.19. The weekly accolade is Patton's first career conference award.
Freshman Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Poly HS) was the last Michigan swimmer to win the award, taking the honor last month (Nov. 20, 2007).
The Wolverines will return to the pool following the semester break for a dual meet against Indiana Saturday, Jan. 12, at Canham Natatorium. Action begins at 1 p.m.
