Edwards, Ofili, Maynard and Wade Named U-M Captains

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coach James Henry of the University of Michigan women's track and field team announced the captains for the 2007-08 season Monday (Dec. 3). The captains include senior Nicole Edwards(Winnepeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey), fifth-year senior Bridgette Maynard(Clawson, Mich./Bishop Foley) and juniors Tiffany Ofili(Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) and Bettie Wade(Northville, Mich./Farmington HS). Henry also named former track athlete Joi Smith, who passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, after a battle with cancer, an honorary captain for the upcoming season.
Edwards, a four-time All-American, holds the Michigan record in the mile (4:36.08). Her personal best include a 1:31.16 in the 600-meter run, 2:04.84 in the 800-meter run, 4:16.06 in the 1,500-meter run and 9:22.73 in the 3,000-meter run.
Maynard is one of the top returning throwers for the Wolverines after she qualified for NCAA Regionals last spring. Maynard's personal bests include a 54-4 weight throw, a 164-5 discus, a 174-2 hammer throw and 45-10 shot put.
Ofili was the 2007 NCAA national champion in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.80 seconds.She ran a personal best8.05 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
Wade earned All-America in the pentathalon and the heptathalon during the 2007 outdoor. Wade has personal bests of 8.56 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 24.62 in the 200-meter dash, 2:20.77 in the 800-meter dash, 6-0 in the high jump, 19-11 in the long jump, 42-1 1/4 in the shot put, 113-5 in the javelin, and point totals of 4,158 in the pentathalon and 5,724 in the heptathalon.
Joi Smith has been named an honorary captain by Coach Henry.
"I thought it would be appropriate and an honor for the team's sake to let the team be aware she is still in our hearts and still a team member," said Henry. "It was an easy choice to let her, her family and her team know she will lead us into success on and off the track."
Smith had a promising career at Michigan. She held a 60-meter hurdles personal-best time of 8.57. In her first ever pentathalon at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational in 2007, Smith took third place with a point total of 3,299. Smith added to that score in her next competition with another third-place finish and personal-best of 3,315 points.
