PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's soccer team were recognized by the Big Ten conference tonight (Thursday, Nov. 8). First-year Wolverines Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) were both named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and graduate-senior defender Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) was chosen as U-M's Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Bowery lead the Wolverines in goals and points, posting five markers and two assists for 12 points. She started all 18 contests for Michigan, quickly becoming a mainstay on the frontline. Her biggest game of the campaign came against Miami (Ohio) where a pair of goals, an assist and five points all set career-highs (Sept. 21).
Stepping into an experienced defensive group, Carron made an immediate impact in the backfield. Starting all 18 games, the freshman defender caused constant headaches for opposing offenses. She was an integral part of a Wolverine defense that allowed just 21 goals the entire year.
For the second-straight year, Cottrell was recognized for her leadership with the Sportsmanship Award. The Wolverine co-captain was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week (Oct. 9) after registering her first career point -- an assist -- on the game-tying goal against Indiana (Oct. 4). She recently was named to the 2007 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV second team.
She is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
Bowery and Carron become the first Wolverines to earn All-Freshman team honors since juniors Skylar Andrews (Plano, Texas/Plano West Senior) and Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) collected the laurel following the 2005 season.
