
Shafner and Howard Elected Team Co-Captains for 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head women's tennis coach Ronni Bernstein announced Tuesday (Nov. 6) that senior Allie Shafner(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) and junior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) have been voted as co-captains by their teammates to lead the Wolverines in 2008. Shafner carries the honor for the second straight season, while Howard holds the title for the first time in her career.
Shafner, who sat out the fall season with a wrist injury, enters her final dual-match campaign listed second among active players in career doubles victories with 49. She had her best season as a sophomore in 2005-06, finishing the year with career-high win totals in singles (14) and doubles (21). Shafner and junior Chisako Sugiyama (Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) proved to be one of U-M's most reliable doubles tandems, as they finished the 2006 dual-match season with an 11-5 record at Nos. 2 and 3, including a 6-2 mark in league play. A 2007 Academic All-Big Ten Conference selection, Shafner served as a co-captain with Elizabeth Exon (2004-07) last year.
Howard, a 2007 Academic All-Big Ten team member and 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete, heads into her third dual-match season on a high note after a solid fall campaign. Competing in singles for the first time since May of 2006, Howard put together three impressive victories Oct. 18-19 to advance to the main draw at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. She also had a strong performance on the doubles court this fall, winning seven of 10 matches. Howard holds career records of 16-15 in singles and 32-22 in doubles.
The Wolverines will open 2008 by hosting the Michigan Invitational Jan. 11-13at the Varsity Tennis Center.
