TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team competed in the Thunderbird Invitational Friday through Sunday (Nov. 2-4) at Arizona State University's Whiteman Tennis Center. The Wolverines posted a combined singles record of 11-16 and went 8-4 in doubles action against players from Arizona State, California, Kansas State, Purdue, Stanford and Utah.
Freshman Rika Tatsuno(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) was the top U-M performer in singles play, winning three of four matches. After dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to California's Claire Ilcinkas in the first round of the 32-player main draw, Tatsuno reeled off straight-set victories over Kansas State's Antea Huljev (6-4, 6-2), Utah's Leigh Walsh (6-3, 6-2) and Arizona State's Lauren Megale (6-1, 6-4).
Junior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and sophomore Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) led the Maize and Blue on the doubles court, posting 8-4 wins over all three of their opponents.
The Thunderbird Invitational marked Michigan's final event of the fall season. The Wolverines will kick off 2008 by hosting the Michigan Invitational Jan. 11-13at the Varsity Tennis Center.
