ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team capped off its preseason schedule with a 5-1 victory over Western Ontario Sunday (Oct. 7) in Yost Ice Arena. Freshman Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) carried the Wolverines, racking up a hat trick in his second collegiate appearance. Junior alternate captain Tim Miller (Davisburg, Mich.) added a goal and a helper en route to the win.
Michigan opened the scoring early in the first frame with a goal by Miller. After collecting a pass from freshman Aaron Palushaj (Northville, Mich.), freshman Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) relayed the puck up ice to Miller, who was streaking down the middle of the slot. Miller's shot was initially stopped by Brad Topping, but the puck dribbled past the netminder into the back of the net at 4:04 to give the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting the Mustangs by an 8-4 margin in the opening period, Michigan was only able to put up the lone goal.
With each team down a man midway through the second stanza, U-M was able to put together a pair of quality scoring chances. Just past the seven minute mark, senior captain Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.) gained the zone with only one man to beat, but opted to drop a pass back to freshman Kevin Quick (Buffalo, N.Y.) alone on the far side of the ice. Quick's one-timer was blockered aside by Topping.
Sophomore Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) had an opportunity at 7:54, but the quick stick of the Western Ontario goalie stymied Summers' attempt and kept the game at 1-0.
The Maize and Blue wasted no time in the third period, capitalizing on a power play 1:50 into the session. Junior Travis Turnbull (Chesterfield, Mo.) threw a pass to sophomore Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.), whose relay hit Hagelin in stride. Hagelin flew up the middle of the ice before he released a laser shot that found the space between Topping's glove and the right-side post. The man-advantage marker gave U-M a 2-0 lead.
Just 45 seconds later, Palushaj pushed U-M ahead by a three-goal margin. Miller scooped up a Rust dish near the right faceoff circle and roped a pass through traffic to Palushaj, who was stationed just outside of the crease. Palushaj blasted the shot in to light the lamp at 2:35.
Western Ontario finally broke onto the scoreboard a minute later, cutting the Wolverines' lead to 3-1. Jeff Martens' shot was stopped by junior Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.) -- but in the midst of the scrum that followed, Kyle Lamb was able to find the back of the net at 3:34 of the final period.
Michigan continued its scoring flurry, however, edging back to a three-goal lead at 4:46. Another tic-tac-toe passing play allowed Turnbull to take a feed from freshman Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ont.) and rifle the puck down to Hagelin, who deposited his second marker of the night over the goal line for the 4-1 advantage.
With seven minutes left in the contest, the Mustangs lifted Topping in favor of Keyvan Hunt.
Hagelin completed his hat-trick bid at 16:49 ti give the Maize and Blue a 5-1 lead. The forward gathered a freshman Scooter Vaughan (Placentia, Calif.) pass and skated around the back of the net, banking a shot off Hunt for the tally.
The Wolverines open their regular season Friday (Oct. 12) with a match against last season's NCAA runner-up Boston College in the Ice Breaker Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. CST.
