U-M Finishes Second Overall at Michigan Intercollegiate

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Sophomore/freshmen Jennie Biewald (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) and Rachel Severin (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) led the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team to a first-place division I finish and second-place overall finish (11 points) Friday (Oct. 5) at the Michigan Intercollegiate on the Katke-Cousins Golf Course.
With the temperature above 80 degrees -- combined with the steep slopes on the 4,000-meter Katke-Cousins course -- the U-M harriers' times were off the usual normal pace. The Wolverines were led by Biewald, who finished first in the individual Division I event with a time of 14:40. Severin followed closely, crossing in second with a time of 14:45.
Sophomore/freshman Alysha Valencia (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) and senior/junior Natasha Luppov (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) rounded out the top five, finishing third and fifth with times of 14:51 and 14:55, respectively.
All six of Michigan's runners finished in the top 20 in Division I, including fifth-year senior Laura Glynn (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) and senior/junior Lisa Montgomery (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who finished 15th and 20th, respectively, with times of 15:19 and 15:45.
The Wolverines overall finish came short of Grand Valley State -- one of the top Division II schools -- which is ranked third nationally and first in the Great Lakes Region. Central Michigan, which took second in Division I behind U-M, came into the meet ranked 13th in the Division I Great Lakes Region.
The Wolverines will return to action Saturday (Oct. 13) at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
