Phelps Named USA Swimming Athlete of the Year

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- University of Michigan men's swimming and diving volunteer coach Michael Phelps was voted USA Swimming's Athlete of the Year last week at the United States Aquatic Sports Convention.
Phelps, who won seven gold medals and set five world records last March at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, also won the organization's ConocoPhillips Performance Award for the second straight year.
U-M head coach Bob Bowman, who was named the American Swimming Coaches Association 2007 Coach of the Year (Sept. 11), was also honored at the convention. Bowman, who is highly regarded for mentoring Michael Phelps, won the honor for the third time in his career.
