Michigan Head Coach Ronni Bernstein
On Lindsey Howard advancing through the qualifying draw... "That's really promising for us. It was the first time she played singles in almost a year and a half. Our goal heading into the fall was to have her back playing by the time we went to Arizona, which is in two weeks. She's really worked hard and strengthened her shoulder. We decided to give it a try this weekend and it really held up, which is really encouraging. She played extremely well and really had no problems with the shoulder. It's a really good sign for us."
On the continued doubles success of Chisako Sugiyama and Whitney Taney... "I think they played well. The match they lost was a match I think they could have played better in. I have to find three doubles teams that are going to win the doubles point in the spring. I'm not really sure what we're going to do at this point. I think Chisako and Whitney definitely make a good team. We've just got to get that doubles point for the team. We're probably going to move them around a bit in Arizona and see what happens."
On Tania Mahtani advancing deep into the singles draw... "Tania had a great tournament. She really stayed focused on the things she was trying to do in the matches. She just played at a really high level. In that last match, she may have been a bit tired mentally. She definitely was a bit off. Overall, she had a great tournament. The win against Maria Mosolova from Northwestern was a huge win for Tania, and then her win today against Iowa's No. 1 player (Jacqueline Lee) was also big. She had some real solid wins and I wouldn't be surprised if she popped into the rankings when they come out in January."
On whether she is pleased with where the team is at this point... "Yes. The girls have been working really hard. We're still trying to figure out what we have. We're watching them play and getting to know them on the court. The girls have really accepted me. They're very into the team. I think we've got great team players here. I'm excited. We have one more fall event to keep working on the things that we're doing in practice. We'll continue to practice and get ready for January."
