ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up her third straight victory Sunday (Oct. 21) to advance to the singles quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, being held at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Mahtani's solid 6-4, 6-3 triumph over fourth-seeded Maria Mosolova of Northwestern earned her a trip to Monday's (Oct. 22) quarterfinal match against Iowa's No. 108-ranked Jacqueline Lee at 11 a.m. Should Mahtani defeat Lee, it will mark the second straight year that Michigan has sent a player to the semifinals of the 64-player draw. Mahtani has won four of five matches overall in the fall.
Junior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and freshman Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) saw their six-match doubles winning streak come to an end, as they fell to Northwestern's Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose by a score of 8-3 in the quarterfinals of the 64-team draw.
In the lone consolation match of the day, Taney secured her first career singles win with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 decision over Notre Dame's No. 110-ranked Colleen Rielley.
