Wolverines Defeat Mexican National Team

LA LOMA, Mexico -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated the Mexican National Team 71-23 Wednesday (Jan. 3) in La Loma, Mexico. The Wolverines earned the top time in all five events, including the top two times in three of the five events. The meet was held in long-course meters.
Michigan opened the meet with a sophomore Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) victory in the 50-meter butterfly. Savulich finished in 26.96, and freshman Chris Dukatz (Troy, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) finished under a second behind in third place (27.88).
Freshman Alon Mandel (Netanya, Israel/Eldad) led the way for the Wolverines in the 50-meter backstroke, earning his first collegiate victory by touching the wall in 27.87. Fellow freshman Andr Schultz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) took second place, finishing less than a second behind Mandel (28.59). Schultz would go on to earn a victory in the 200-meter individual medley, when he clocked a time of 2:16.98.
In the 50-meter breaststroke, freshman Scott Spann (Austin, Texas/Westlake) and junior Grant Burtch (Holland, Mich./Holland) finished 1-2, respectively, to further distance the Wolverines from Team Mexico. Spann finished in 30.32, while Burtch clocked a time of 31.38.
The Wolverines swept the top three spots in the 50-meter freestyle to put Michigan up by a score of 60-16. Sophomore Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) led the way for Michigan, touching the wall in 24.72. Sophomores Evan Ryser (Katy, Texas/James E. Taylor) and Jamie Martone (Troy, Mich/Troy) both finished less than a second behind Patton. Ryser took second place (25.17), while Martone finished in third place (25.34).
Michigan will have a day off before traveling back to the United States to take on Arizona at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday (Jan. 5). Michigan will also compete exhibition against California at the meet. Friday's meet begins at 2:00 p.m. MST.
