The Michigan Lineup
The Wolverines will carry five players for the main team at the Wolverine Invitational, but those who do not qualify for the "A" squad will play as an individual during the weekend. Three spots have already been determined as senior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), senior Ali Stinson (Penticton, British Columbia/Penticton Secondary) and freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) will be part of Michigan's main team. With qualifying leading right up to the tournament, the remaining two spots for the Wolverine "A" squad will be determined throughout the week. Competing for a starting sport are: senior/junior Julie Inwood (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), junior Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), junior Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School), sophomore Lydia Bentez Coln (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Pendleton School), sophomore Audra Walter (Burton, Mich./Flint Kearsley HS), junior/sophomore Rose Cassard (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) and freshman Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS).
Last Time On the Greens: Broderick Runner-up, Michigan Fourth at Lady Northern
The Wolverines opened the season with a solid fourth-place showing at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 16-17) at MSU's Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Maize and Blue battled back and forth among the top four all tournament long and closed with a 904 54-hole team total (303-298-303). Brianna Broderick had a strong opening weekend, just missing out on medalist honors as she finished as the runner-up with a three-over 219 total (74-71-74). Ali Stinson had another consistent tournament as she tied for fifth with a 223 total (78-72-73), and in her first collegiate tournament Ashley Bauer earned a top-20 finish with a 228 total (76-78-74), giving her a tie for 17th. Other Wolverines in the opening tournament included: Lindsay Davis, tied for 37th with a 235 total (75-77-83); Isabelle Gendreau, tied for 61st with a 248 total (86-80-82); and Julie Inwood, tied for 67th with a 251 total (86-83-82).
Home Course Knowledge
The Wolverines have continued to have success when hosting tournaments at the U-M Golf Course. In 22 women's events held at the Maize and Blue Jewel, the Wolverines have seven total team titles, which is tied for the most with Indiana. In fact, since 2000 the Wolverines have won four of seven events. Michigan has also added six individual titles to that list. In the history of the Wolverine program, they have accumulated 26 team titles and 22 individual titles.
Seniors Continue to Be Lineup Staples
By playing in the Lady Northern Invitational, Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson played in their 36th straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue. The duo, who has started all 36 of those tournaments, has yet to miss a tournament in their career. Former Wolverine Laura Olin set the U-M record playing in 50 consecutive tournaments in her career.
Something About the Green and White
There is something about MSU's Forest Akers West Course for Brianna Broderick. In the season-opening Lady Northern Invitational, she earned her fourth career top-five finish with her runner-up finish. In fact, her only better finish was her only collegiate win, at the 2004 Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 18-19), which was also played at Forest Akers. Broderick's 219 total at the Lady Northern tied her career-best mark at Forest Akers West Course. She also tallied a 219 total when she took medalist honors in 2004.
Getting the Red Number to Tie Career Best
In the second round of the Lady Northern Invitational, Brianna Broderick posted a one-under 71. In that second round, she posted 13 pars and three birdies for her best single-round total since posting a 71 in the second round of the 2006 Rio Verde Classic (March 2-4), which was six tournaments ago. It also tied her career-best round, equaling the 71s she posted in the second round of the 2006 Rio Verde, the second round of the 2005 Lady Boilermaker Invitational (April 9-10) and the first round of the 2004 Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 11-12).
Miss Consistency Starts Up Again
Arguably one of the most consistent golfers in Michigan history, Ali Stinson opened her senior campaign by earning her fourth top-five finish of her career as she tied for fifth at the Lady Northern Invitational. Her other top-five finishes include: the 2004 Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate (Nov. 1-2, t-3rd), the 2004 Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 11-12, 5th) and the 2005 Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2, t-4th). In 36 career tournaments she has 15 top-20 finishes for the Maize and Blue.
Playing Like a Veteran
Ashley Bauer made the most of her first collegiate tournament. Starting at the Lady Northern Invitational, Bauer earned a top-20 finish as she tied for 17th with a 228 total. After opening with a 76, she posted a 78 in the second round. She rallied in the final round with a two-over 74 to finish with the 228 total.
Continuing the Postseason Trend
With the start of the 2006-07 season, the Wolverines will be looking to keep their postseason successes rolling. In five of the last six years, Michigan has had a team or an individual representative get invited to an NCAA Regional. In fact, this year the Maize and Blue will host the 2007 NCAA Central Regional at the U-M Golf Course (May 10-12). In addition to the NCAA success, the Wolverines have also finished among the top five at the Big Ten Championships in five of the last six years as well, including the program's best finish ever closing as the runner-up in 2005. U-M has also had at least one player be named an All-Big Ten golfer the last three years.
Golf Digest Ranks Wolverines Among Top 50 Programs
Over the summer, the Wolverines were named one of the NCAA's 50 Best Colleges for Women's Golf according to the September issue of Golf Digest, which is highlighted with the second annual College Golf Guide. The Wolverines received a No. 38 ranking on the prestigious list. The Maize and Blue joins three other Big Ten programs honored as the NCAA's best golf institutions: Ohio State (No. 18), Purdue (No. 36) and Michigan State (No. 46).
