DEXTER, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team made its 2006 debut at the Wolverine Open on Friday (Sept. 1) with junior Lisa Uible (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) taking first place overall at Hudson Mills Metropark. At the last second Uible (18:06) overtook Eastern Michigan's Kalli Williams (18:07), who had led a majority of the 5,000-meter race.
Eight other Wolverine competitors donned the Michigan uniform for the early-season meet with redshirt freshman Heather Sirko (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) placing fifth with a time of 19:05. Next across the line was redshirt freshman Katie Williams (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) in sixth with a mark of 19:11. Redshirt freshman Kelly Sampson (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and junior/sophomore Lisa Canty (Highland, Mich./Milford) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 19:19 and 19:23. Rounding out the Michigan runners were junior sophomore Natasha Luppov (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), who finished 10th (19:35), and redshirt freshman Alison Nesbitt (Essexville, Mich./Garber), who took 11th (19:44).
Three Wolverines also had their collegiate debut, competing unattached in the event. Freshman Jenny Morgan (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) finished in third place overall with a time of 18:13. Freshman Eileen Creutz (Saline, Mich./Saline) followed shortly behind, placing fourth with a mark of 18:33. Freshman Joanne Gabl (Saline, Mich./Saline) also finished in the top 10, taking ninth place (19:26).
The Wolverines will travel to Bloomington, Ind., next Saturday (Sept. 9) to compete in the Indiana Open. Hosted by Indiana University, the event is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the IU Cross Country Course.
