VICTORIA, B.C. -- Incoming University of Michigan men's swimming freshman Andr Schultz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) joined two U-M coaches and three former Wolverines at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships, held Thursday through Sunday (Aug. 17-20) at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
Representing Brazil, Schultz was part of the 800-meter medley relay team that finished sixth overall (7:29.74). He also placed fifth (13th overall) in the consolation final of the 200-meter individual medley (2:05.31) and sixth (14th overall) in the 200-meter backstroke consolation final (2:05.32).
Michigan head coach Bob Bowman served as an assistant coach for the United States team, which was led by U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps, who broke his own world records in the 200-meter butterfly (1:53.80) and the 200-meter individual medley (1:55.84). Phelps was also part of a team that set a world record in the 400-meter freestyle relay (3:12.46), and he won gold for his performance in the 400-meter individual medley (4:10.47).
Phelps teamed with two other Club Wolverine members -- former U-M star Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) and Klete Keller -- and Ryan Lochte in winning the gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay (7:05.28). The same quartet took the 800 freestyle relay gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Individually Vanderkaay placed fifth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:48.05) and 1,500-meter freestyle (15:16.89), while ex-Wolverine Andrew Hurd (2002-05) won the gold in the 800-meter freestyle (7:55.88) and was part of the Canadian 800-meter freestyle relay team that claimed the silver medal (7:12.39). Swimming for Team USA, butterfly specialist Davis Tarwater (2003-06) placed fifth in the 200-meter butterfly (1:58.22) and sixth in the 100-meter event (53.55).
Keller won the 200-meter freestyle gold medal (1:46.20), while Club Wolverine teammate Erik Vendt earned silver in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:07.17).
NBC will have tape-delayed coverage of the Pan Pac Championships on Saturday (Aug. 26, 2-4 p.m. EDT) and Sunday (Aug. 27, noon-1:30 EDT).
