Six U-M Women Lead Club Wolverine to National Title

IRVINE, Calif. -- Six members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team helped Ann Arbor-based Club Wolverine to a national title at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships (Aug. 1-5). Club Wolverine's 812 points bested Longhorn Aquatics' 598 for the victory in the five-day event. In addition, Club Wolverine won the men's and combined titles.
Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) was the first Michigan swimmer to score as she touched the wall in 2:00.20, placing first in the 200-meter freestyle consolation final. In the next event, Smith anchored the 'A' 400-meter freestyle relay team to fifth place with a time of 3:49.62 to keep Club Wolverine near the top of the standings. Incoming freshman Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) and Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) swam on the 'B' 400-meter foursome that took ninth.
On day three, Lindsey Smith scored again when she clocked in sixth in the consolation 50-meter freestyle final, posting a time of 26.12. Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) followed up with a time of 4:52.89 in the 400-meter individual medley, which was also good for sixth in the consolation final. Club Wolverine jumped up in the standings after the 'A' quartet that included Lindsey Smith, swam a runner-up time of 8:09.73 in the 800-meter freestyle relay. The 'B' foursome in the same event that included Kelly and Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) also contributed a fifth-place time of 8:18.25.
The final day saw Hayley Peirsol lead off with a national-title time of 8:26.45 in the 800-meter freestyle. Club Wolverine went 4-5 in the final event of the day to solidify the national championship. The 'B' quartet that included Johnson and Lindsey Smith clocked in fourth at 4:15.13 in the 400-meter medley relay, while the 'A' foursome that included Kelly and Mueller placed fifth with a time of 4:15.42.
Club Wolverine members Peirsol and Kaitlin Sandeno earned spots on the Pan Pacific Championships roster. The championships will be held Aug. 17-21 in Victoria, B.C.
