ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second straight year, the University of Michigan women's golf team will have a pair of representatives at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship as senior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) and recent graduate Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) will play in the 106th U.S. Women's Amateur, Monday through Sunday, Aug. 7-13, at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.
Broderick, who is playing in her third straight U.S. Women's Amateur, played her way into the 156-player field after shooting a 76 in her U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier at Indian Hills Country Club in Kansas City, Mo. Following the qualifier the Wolverine senior was the first alternate coming from her site, however she received a call from the USGA as a spot opened up for her to play. Schmucker, who closed out her Michigan career in May, made the field after winning her qualifier with a round of 73 at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington, Minn.
In her two previous U.S. Women's Amateur experiences, Broderick has had one advancement to match-play. At the 2004 championship at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa., Broderick played her way into the match-play field of 64 after rounds of 77 and 76 for a 153 total, tying her for 39th. After she defeated Gina Umeck 4 and 2 in the first round of match play, she was eliminated by Morgan Pressel, 4 and 3. At the 2005 championship at the Ansley Golf Club and the Settindown Creek Course in Roswell, Ga., Broderick competed, but did not advance to match-play. After opening with an 83, she followed with an 81 to give her a 164 total and a tie for 125th.
For Schmucker it also marks her third career appearance at the U.S. Women's Amateur. She competed in the 2003 event at Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa. Schmucker finished in an 11-way tie for 49th in stroke play qualifying (76-76/152) and was eliminated by Paula Creamer, 6 and 5, in the first round of match play. In 2005, she advanced to match play after tying for 19th in stroke play with a 147 total (70-77). After a first round win against Kasi Lee, 2 and 1, she was eliminated in the second round, 6 and 5, against Amanda McCurdy.
The U.S. Women's Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event is open to any female amateur who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. The Women's Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
The U.S. Women's Amateur will consist of two rounds of stroke play to determine a field of 64, who will then compete in a match-play format.
