Ann Arbor, Mich -- Rising sophomore-to-be Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) of the University of Michigan womens track and field team claimed first place in the 100m hurdles at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field National Championships (June 21-25). Four other Michigan athletes competed at the event which was held at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI.
Ofili took home the USA Junior title in the 100m hurdles with a blazing career-best time of 13.15, beating out her nearest competition by 0.23 seconds smashing the previous meet record (13.22) set by Ronnetta Alexander of South Carolina in 2004. Ofili's performance would have broken her own Michigan outdoor record (13.37) by 0.22 seconds, which she set at the Big Ten Championships in her freshman season, had it been a collegiate meet.
Fifth-year senior-to-be Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) participated in the USA National Championships portion, held at the same site, where she competed unattached in the 10,000m run finishing with a seventh-place time of 33:58.18. Former Wolverine Katie McGregor also competed in the 10,000-meter run in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing in fourth place with a time of 32:49.62.
In more hurdling action at the USA Juniors, sophomore-to-be Katie LaValley (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) placed sixth in the 400m hurdles finals with a time of 59.87. In the 400m hurdles prelims, sophomore-to-be Amber Hay (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) posted the 14th quickest time of 1:02.52, coming up short of qualifying for the finals by 1.25 seconds.
