Erdman, Kohlmeier Named Track Academic All-Americans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior/junior co-captain Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and sophomore Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patricks) were named to the 2006ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americateam for women's trackandfield and cross country asannounced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)on Thursday (June 22).
CoSIDA's Academic All-America committee selects the honorees for its 2005-06 national teams, which are comprised of student-athletes who were voted to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-district first team from their respective districts by the CoSIDA membership.
Erdman and Kohlmeier earned Academic All-America second and third team honors, respectively, for the first time in their careers. This marks the first time two U-M womens track teammates have received this honor. They join football's Jason Avant (second team) and wrestling's Eric Tannenbaum (second team) as Michgan's 2005-06 Academic All-Americans.
Majoring in both English and Spanish, Erdman earned 2006 NCAA indoor All-America honors in the 800-meter run and the distance medley relay, giving her five inher Michigan career. Erdman was the Big Ten champion in the 600-meter run at the 2006 indoor championships, making her the first three-time 600m Big Ten champion (2003, '04 and '06) in conference history. She and Kohlmeier also helped lead U-M to the distance medley relay Big Ten title, breaking a 10-year old conference record in the process (11:25.5).
Kohlmeier had a breakthrough year in 2006, earning All-Big Ten first team honors in cross country with a second-place finish at the conference championships. She was Michigan's top finisher in six cross country meets, winning two individual titles (Great Meadows Invitational and Spartan Invitational). During the track and field season, she earned bothindoor and outdoor All-America honors in the 5,000-meter, and was the Big Ten indoor 5,000-meter and distance medley relay champion.
Erdman, Kohlmeier and the Wolverines recently capped off the outdoorseason with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the highest finish in program history.
