ATLANTA, Ga. -- Senior captain Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) broke his own Big Ten Conference and school record en route to his second consecutive 200-yard butterfly national title to lead the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on the final day (Saturday, March 25) of the NCAA Championships. U-M finished eighth overall with 209 points as Auburn University (480.5 points) captured its fourth consecutive NCAA title.
In second after the first lap, Tarwater put together a sub-26 second leg to pull into first, and despite close competition the senior never relinquished the lead. Tarwater secured his victory by swimming the fastest final split, making him the fourth Wolverine -- first since 1966-67 -- to repeat in the event. Sophomore Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) also posted a top time in the 200 fly with a sixth-place finish, touching the wall in 1:44.68.
In the opening event of the night, senior captain Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) swam to his second individual runner-up performance of the meet in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The senior set a personal best of 14:33.76, finishing behind Sebastien Rouault of Georgia. Freshman Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) also competed in the timed final and finished 21st in 15:12.07.
After missing the "A" final by just 0.04 seconds in the preliminaries, senior Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland) came back strong to finish first in the "B" final. His time of 1:43.12 earned the team 11 points as he placed ninth overall. Florida's Ryan Lochte successfully defended his title in the event with a U.S. Open, America and NCAA record of 1:37.68.
The three senior captains all finished their storied careers in the Maize and Blue together as members of U-M's entry in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event. DeJong, Tarwater and Peter Vanderkaay were joined by freshman Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) as the foursome took first in the consolation heat for ninth overall, finishing in 2:55.07.
