Signorelli Posts His Best National Finish at Winter Cup

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team posted the best national finish of his career when he grabbed ninth in the all-around at the 2006 Winter Cup on Saturday night (Feb. 4). Signorelli stayed consistent throughout the meet for an all-around total of 84.40, which included placing 10th on the high bar with a 14.15.
Guillermo Alverez of Team Cheveron won the competition with a score of 89.35 and automatically qualified to the 2006 U.S. National Team. The other 13 members of the national team were announced Sunday (Feb. 5), but did not include any Michigan gymnasts.
Senior Luke Bottke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS), who competed as a specialist on two events, posted Michigan's highest finish on any event by grabbing seventh on floor exercise with a 14.60. Bottke also scored a 15.90 on vault for 12th place.
Despite trouble on pommel horse, freshman Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS) placed 21st in the all-around with a score of 80.40. Catrambone placed in the top 20 on two events, the parallel bars (19th) and high bar (20th), with scores of 14.00 and 13.60, respectively.
Former Wolverine Edward Umphrey competed on four events, with his strongest showing coming on vault with a 16.05 for fifth place. Complete results are available at the Winter Cup site.
Michigan returns to Big Ten Conference action next Saturday (Feb. 11) when it hosts Minnesota at Cliff Keen Arena at 7 p.m.
