Wolverines Earn Fourth Place at Pacific Coast Classic

OAKDLAND, Calif. -- Using top-five performances on four events, the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team grabbed fourth place out of a field of seven teams with a 208.600 at the Aquafina Pacific Coast Collegiate Classic held Saturday (Feb. 25) at the Oakland Convention Center. Oklahoma was first (217.300), followed by Stanford (216.075) in second, and California (212.650) in third.
The all-around competition saw two Wolverines place in the top 10. Senior Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) notched fourth place with a 51.85, while freshman Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./ St. John Vianney HS) grabbed seventh with a 49.65.
Senior Luke Bottke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) posted the team's highest score on the floor exercise with a 9.35 for fifth place. Following closely behind were freshmen Scott Bregman (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State HS) and Kent Caldwell (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin HS), who notched career highs with a 9.30 and a 9.20, respectively.
Pommel horse proved to be a rough spot for the Wolverines, where freshmen Phillip Goldberg (Ringgold, Ga./McCallie HS) paced the team with an 8.10. Fellow freshman Rosso added an 8.00 of his own.
Rosso led the team on rings with a solid 9.00, just ahead of junior Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), who scored an 8.80. Junior Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS) added an 8.75, and freshman Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS) posted an 8.70.
Sophomore Daniel Rais (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) was the team's highest scorer on the vault with a 9.15 and a tie for third place. Senior vault specialist Andrew DiGiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) was just behind with a 9.05, followed by Signorelli with an 8.90.
Signorelli continued to excel by leading the team on parallel bars with a season-high 9.00 to grab fifth place. Catrambone and Elkind added scores of 8.80 and 8.40, respectively, to contribute to a solid team effort on the event.
On the high bar, the same trio of Signorelli, Catrambone and Elkind again paced the team. Catrambone posted a stellar 9.25 for fifth place, followed by an 8.80 from Elkind and an 8.60 from Signorelli.
Michigan returns to action Saturday (March 4) when it travels to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on Stanford University in Burnham Pavilion at 7 p.m. PST.
