Milers Lead Wolverines on Day One at Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team displayed its depth on the first day of competition at the Tyson Invitational on Friday (Feb. 10) at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Indoor Track. In the 30-team meet, the Wolverines had 16 individuals participate in seven different events.
The leader for the Maize and Blue was senior/junior Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac), as she took second place in the Championship section of the mile run with a time of 4:44.34. The time was not only Erdman's personal best, but it was also her fourth NCAA provisional qualifying time of this season.
Senior/junior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) won the College section of the mile with a time of 4:47.82, just 0.22 short of a provisional time. The Wolverines had two others in the top 11, with freshman Heather Sirko (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) placing seventh (4:56.24) and senior/junior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) coming in 11th (5:00.21).
Freshman Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) ran in the 60m dash prelims, where she posted a time of 7.78 for 42nd place. In the 60m hurdles prelims, Ofili took 14th place with a time of 8.52.
In the field events, senior/junior Jamie Barbour (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford) lead the way by taking 17th in the weight throw with a throw of 49-3 3/4, while freshman Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington) took 21st place in the long jump (18-1 1/2).
The Wolverines will return for the second and final day of action at the Tyson Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 11) at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. CST.
