Hart Finishes Fifth in Heisman Trophy Balloting

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- University of Michigan junior tailback Mike Hart (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga Central HS) finished fifth in the balloting for the 2006 Heisman Trophy announced Saturday night (Dec. 9) in New York City. Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith won the John W. Heisman Memorial Trophy.
Hart collected 214 votes, including five first-place votes, to finish in fifth place. He was the second-highest rated Big Ten player behind winner Smith (2,540 votes). Arkansas running back Darren McFadden (878), Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn (782) and West Virginia's Steve Slaton (218) placed second through fourth, respectively. Hart is the ninth Wolverine running back and 20th U-M player to finish in the top 12 of the Heisman balloting.
The nations seventh-leading rushing, Hart set career highs with 301 carries for 1,515 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. He was one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award as the nations outstanding running back. Wolverine Trio Adds All-America Accolades: Senior cornerback Leon Hall (Vista, Calif./Vista HS), senior left tackle Jake Long (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East HS) and senior defensive end LaMarr Woodley (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS) were named to the Football Writers Association All-America Team announced today during the ESPN/Cingular Wireless All-American Show on ABC.
The Wolverines led all teams nationally with three players on the 25-man team, the second time in the last three seasons that U-M has accomplished that feat. Ohio State, Texas, West Virginia and UCLA each had two players on the team.
The trio was featured during the one hour broadcast and tied Ohio State for the most All-Americans on the writer's team.
