CHICAGO, Ill. -- University of Michigan football co-captain LaMarr Woodley (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS) has been named the recipient of the 2006 Ted Hendricks Award, the Ted Hendricks Foundation announced Wednesday (Dec. 6). The award is given to the foremost defensive end in college football for on-field performance, leadership abilities, and contributions to school and community.
Woodley
Woodley, a senior defensive end, has collected numerous accolades since the end of the regular season. A consensus All-Big Ten Conference first team selection, Woodley was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Defensive Lineman of the Year. He has been named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and Rivals.com. Woodley was also named the Rivals.com National Defensive Player of the Year.
In announcing the 2006 winner, Ted Hendricks said, "I would like to congratulate LaMarr Woodley on being voted the winner of this year's award. He has excelled on the field in leadership and performance. To add to his merits, he has been a valuable member of his community."
Woodley led the conference and is tied for seventh nationally with 11 sacks on the season. Woodley tallied 15.5 tackles for loss and 33 total stops this season to lead all Wolverine defensive linemen. He notched five multi-sack games in 2006 and tied a school record with four forced fumbles. The senior co-captain also recorded four fumble recoveries in 2006, taking one back for his first career touchdown, a 54-yard touchdown return at Notre Dame (Sept. 16). He was named Big Ten Player of the week for his season-high five tackles at Penn State and was awarded the Master Coaches Survey Game Ball of the Week for his three tackles-for-loss game against Northwestern.
For his career, Woodley has collected 23 sacks out of 51.5 tackles for loss and 174 total tackles. His sack and tackle for loss totals rank seventh and second, respectively, all-time at Michigan. His 10 forced fumbles are a school record. Aggressive on the line and in coverage, Woodley has accumulated five career pass breakups, with four coming this season.
Woodley is a co-founder of the program "Heroes for Kids" with Michigan State defensive tackle Clifton Ryan, also a Saginaw native. The program is designed to aid the Saginaw Recreation Department.
