ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis program recently announced that senior Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) and junior Allie Shafner (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) have been voted as co-captains by their teammates to lead the Wolverines in 2007. Both student-athletes are carrying the honor for the first time in their careers.

A two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection (2004, '06), Exon enters her final dual match season as Michigan's most experienced singles player. With a career record of 70-48 (.593), she needs just three victories to move into the top 10 on U-M's all-times singles wins list. Exon has compiled at least 18 singles victories in each of her first three seasons, including a career-best 27-15 mark as a freshman in 2003-04. The 27 wins tied her for the fourth-best single-season win total in program history, and also earned her the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Region Rookie of the Year award. Exon has performed just as strongly in the classroom, as the business administration major has been named a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete (2004-05) and Academic All-Big Ten (2005-06) honoree, as well as a three-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award recipient (2004-06).
The lone junior on this year's roster, Shafner enters her third dual match season listed third among active players in career doubles victories with 38. She had her best season as a sophomore in 2005-06, finishing the year with career-high win totals in singles (14) and doubles (21). Shafner and sophomore Chisako Sugiyama (Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) proved to be one of Michigan's most reliable doubles tandems, as they finished the 2006 dual match season with an 11-5 record at Nos. 2 and 3, including a 6-2 mark in conference play.
The Wolverines will open 2007 by hosting the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 12-14, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
