Michigan Cannot Hold First-Day Lead, Falls at Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- After holding a 76-72 lead after the first day of competition, the 11th-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team lost 190.5-172.5 at ninth-ranked Georgia on Saturday (Nov. 4) at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The Wolverines finished 1-2-3 in the 200-yard individual medley as junior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) won the event, clocking 1:50.60, while junior Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) finished closely behind in second place with a time of 1:50.79. Freshman Scott Spann (Austin, Texas/Westlake) took third place (1:52.67).
After capturing an NCAA consideration time in the 200-meter butterfly last night,
sophomore Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) was able to swim to an NCAA consideration time of 15:26.25 in the 1,650-meter freestyle, finishing second overall in the event. The Wolverines also finished in the next three spots with freshman Adam DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland) taking third (16:04.32), junior Johnny Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) placing fourth (16:06.49), and sophomore Christian Sprang (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) finishing fifth (16:18.68).
Spann continued his impressive weekend as he captured another victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 56.00. Vanderkaay finished just over a second behind in the event, taking third place with a time of 57.07.
Freshman Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) also swam to a top time in the 100-yard butterfly, as he tied Georgia's Gil Stovall with a time of 49.24. Sophomore Curtis Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) followed in third place, touching the wall in 50.33.
Sophomore Kyle Schroeder (Milan, Mich./Milan) scored an NCAA zone qualifying mark of 323.70 in the three-meter diving, placing third overall. He also led the Wolverines in the one-meter event, scoring 294.90.
Michigan gets back into action against Princeton University and Michigan State University at Canham Natatorium on Saturday (Nov. 11). The meet with the Tigers and Spartans begins at 11 a.m.
