NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Sugar Bowl Committee has announced the selection of University of Michigan junior quarterback Chad Henne (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson HS) as one of 11 finalists for the 2006 Manning Award. The annual award is presented to the nation's best college quarterback.
Henne
Henne completed 177-of-287 passes for 2,119 yards and 20 touchdowns during the 2006 regular season. He became the first quarterback in school history to throw for 20-plus touchdown passes three times during his career. Henne earned All-Big Ten second team selection from both the coaches and media.
Out of his 20 touchdowns this season, 13 of them have covered 20 or more yards with seven going for 37 yards or longer. Additionally, Henne tossed eight scores on third down plays.
The Manning Award was created in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning and will be presented to the recipient following the holiday bowl season. It is the only quarterback award which takes into consideration the candidates bowl performances.
The winner will be determined by a select panel of national media covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings. Last year's winner of the award was Texas quarterback Vince Young, who led the undefeated Longhorns to a national championship.
