ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis program announced today (Nov. 21) that it has signed Chris Madden of Lotus, Calif., and David Streeter of Beverly Hills, Mich., to National Letters of Intent to attend U-M and play for the Wolverines in 2007-08.
Madden currently holds a USTA national ranking of No. 11 in Boy's 18 singles, and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in Northern California. He was the singles champion at the Boy's 18 National Open in Honolulu, Hawaii, last February, and he also reached the singles round of 16 at the Boy's 18 Claycourt Championships. He reached a national ranking of No. 14 in Boy's 16, and won a silver ball in doubles at the Boy's 14 Easter Bowl.
Madden, who is considered a blue chip recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Ponderosa High School. He went undefeated, dropping only one set in two years, and claimed two section championships and two league MVP awards. Madden was instrumental in Ponderosa's back-to-back Sierra Valley Conference championships.
"With Chris, we are truly getting the total package," said U-M head coach Bruce Berque. "He's one of the best players in California, and he's an exceptional student and a future team leader. Chris has a tremendous passion for the game, and his positive attitude and enthusiasm will be a great influence on this program."
Streeter compiled an impressive record of 80-3 during his first three varsity seasons at Birmingham Groves High School. He claimed a pair of Division II state titles at No. 2 singles as a freshman and sophomore, and was the runner-up at No. 1 singles as a junior last season. A two-time team captain, Streeter guided Birmingham Groves to three straight runner-up team finishes at the state championships. He is a three-time all-state selection, and a 2006 National High School All-American.
Streeter is considered the top senior recruit in the state of Michigan, according to TennisRecruiting.net. He has been listed as high as No. 36 nationally by the website.
Streeter was just crowned the Boy's 18 doubles champion with partner William Gardner at the most recent Midwest Indoor Open Championships, which were held Nov. 11-13 in Toledo, Ohio. He also claimed the Boy's 18 singles title at the Midwest Indoor Open Championships in October, as well as the singles crown at the prestigious St. Louis Gateway National Tournament in 2005.
"We are extremely excited that David will be joining our program," said Berque. "For the second year in a row, I feel confident saying that we've gotten the best player in Michigan. David has developed a reputation as an extremely hard worker and he's a very intense competitor. We're confident that with those qualities he will add a tremendous amount to our program."
Michigan will lose three letterwinners from its 2006-07 roster, as seniors Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS), Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) will graduate in the spring.
