Michigan Coaches Collect Golden Goggle Awards

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head swimming coach Bob Bowman was given the Coach of the Year award at USA Swimming's 2006 Golden Goggle Awards, held in Beverly Hills, Calif., Monday (Nov. 20). Bowman coached seven of the athletes that qualified for the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championship team.

Volunteer Assistant Coach Michael Phelps took home two awards as well. He earned his second Male Race of the Year award after setting the new world record in the 200-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Championships. Phelps also won the Relay Performance of the Year Award for being a member on the 4x100-meter freestyle relay team that set a new world record at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Club Wolverine swimmer Erik Vendt won the Perseverance Award for coming out of retirement to make the 2007 World Championships team. This year, Vendt competed for the first time since the 2004 Olympic games.
A total of 13 U.S. Olympians were nominated for awards in eight different categories.
The University of Michigan mens swimming team gets back into action at the U.S. Open, held in West Lafayette, Ind. The meet will be held from November 30 C December 2.
