EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team owned the top time or score in 12 of 13 events in a 153-85 victory over Michigan State Wednesday evening (Oct. 25) at Charles McCaffree Pool. Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) was the top swimmer for the Wolverines, earning the top time in two individual events in addition to competing on the first-place 200-yard medley relay team that set a pool record. Mueller's top time of 4:19.52 in the 400-yard individual medley also broke a facility record.
Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) collected zone-qualifying and first-place scores in both the one-meter (295.50) and three-meter (323.56) diving events to help seal the win for Michigan.
The Wolverines set the tone for the evening in the first event, taking the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant), Mueller, Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) combined for the win in 1:44.70. Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles, Fla.) and Emily Christy (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford Area Senior) extended U-M's lead in the first individual event, going 1-2 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Gilliam's time of 10:12.54 bested Christy's mark of 10:18.19.
Catherine Nosal (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) finished less than a second behind MSU's only winner of the night in the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 1:55.09. The Wolverines removed any doubt about a close meet as they reeled off victories in the next seven events.
Lindsey Smith topped the field in the 50-yard freestyle (24.05), which was followed by Michigan earning all of the points in the 400-yard individual medley. Mueller's first-place time (4:19.52) and Emily Brunemann's (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) second-place mark (4:22.50) in the event each eclipsed the NCAA 'B' standard.
Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Brady made it three and four straight as Johnson touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.33) and Brady clocked in No. 1 in the 100-yard freestyle (51.88). Wendy Shieh (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Leigh Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished runner-up behind Johnson and Brady, respectively. Shieh earned a time of 58.32 in the butterfly and Cole a 52.73 in the freestyle.
Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) then nabbed a top time in the 100-yard backstroke (57.06), ahead of Kelly and Katie Smith (Plano, Texas/Hebron), who went 2-3, respectively.
Brunemann continued the winning streak in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.21) before Michigan chose to swim exhibition in the final two events of the evening. Brunemann's time of 4:55.21 beat out second-place Gilliam and third-place Christy in the 500-yard freestyle.
Mueller, swimming exhibition, touched the wall more than two seconds ahead of the competition in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.87). U-M's quartet of Brady, Cole, Hannah Smith and Lindsey Smith completed the night with the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.04), besting the field by nearly four seconds.
Michigan will now head on the road to compete against No. 5 Georgia for a two-day meet. U-M takes on the Bulldogs Nov. 3-4 at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. The start time for Friday action is 6 p.m. with Saturday competition beginning at 1 p.m.
