ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After winning its home tournament this past weekend, the University of Michigan women's golf team vaulted into the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Rating Top 25, as the Wolverines are 12th in the rankings through Oct. 1.
Michigan, which is among five Big Ten teams in the top 25, has a performance rating of 73.08. Georgia sits atop the poll with a rating of 71.14, with Duke second (71.38) and UCLA third (72.03). Other ranked Big Ten teams include: Michigan State (10th, 73.00), Ohio State (tie-16th, 73.16), Northwestern (tie-16th, 73.16) and Purdue (21st, 73.34).
In the individual rankings a trio of Wolverines have cracked the top 100. Senior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) is the top-rated individual among Big Ten players, sitting in the 21st spot (71.32). Fellow senior Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) is 73rd with a 72.93 rating, while freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) is 93rd at 73.42.
The performance rating system is based on a mathematical formula that uses a player's won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential between those players, then links all players to one another based on common opponents.
Michigan opened its 2006-07 season with a strong fourth-place finish at the Lady Northern Inviational (Sept. 16-17), where 10 of 11 Big Ten teams were among the field. This past weekend, U-M won both the team title and individual title at its Wolverine Invitational. In a wire-to-wire battle with Ohio State, the Wolverines took the team title by two strokes, 906 to 908. Individually, Broderick took top honors, winning on the third hole of a playoff against Ohio State's Dana Je.
The Maize and Blue will take a weekend off before heading to Knoxville, Tenn., Friday through Sunday, Oct. 13-15, for the prestigious 2006 Mercedes-Benz Classic at Cherokee Country Club.
