DiGiore, Woodward Win Event Titles in Loss to Sooners

NORMAN, Okla. -- Despite outstanding individual wins by senior Andrew DiGiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) on the vault and sophomore Paul Woodward (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) on the pommel horse, the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team fell to No. 2 Oklahoma by a score of 216.200-203.900 on Friday night (Jan. 27) in McCasland Field House.
DiGiore won the vault, his signature event, with a season-high score of 9.55, while Woodward claimed his first pommel horse title of the year with an 8.45.
From the start of the competition Michigan trailed Oklahoma. Although the Wolverines posted seven top-five individual event scores, they were unable to slow the Sooners' momentum on their home floor. Michigan experimented with several new routines and lineup orders in preparation for the meet to determine its best squad on each event.
Sophomore Daniel Rais (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) notched the team's highest score on the floor with an 8.90 for fifth place and tied for second on vault with a 9.15. Standout freshman Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS) and junior Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) posted solid rings scores of 8.90 and 8.85 to place fourth and fifth, respectively.
Sophomore Arren Yoshimura (Denver, Colo./George Washington HS), a relative newcomer to the lineup, competed well on three events for the Wolverines. Yoshimura, who sat out last season as a medical redshirt, turned in the team's top performance on parallel bars with an 8.40 for fourth place.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Winter Cup on Thursday and Saturday (Feb. 2-4).
