Freshmen, Seniors Lead Michigan to Third at Windy City

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Led by senior Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) and freshman Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS), the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team placed third at the 36th annual Windy City Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 14). This marks the fifth year in a row that the Wolverines have notched third place in the season's inaugural competition.
The No. 6-ranked Wolverines' score of 207.400 trailed only winner Ohio State (211.650) and runner-up Illinois (210.500). Iowa (205.800) placed fourth, Minnesota (203.900) grabbed the fifth spot and host Illinois-Chicago (197.350) rounded out the field of six teams.
Signorelli competed consistently for the Wolverines, placing in the top 10 in three of the four events in which he competed (floor exercise, parallel bars, and high bar). He was also Michigan's highest scorer on floor (9.35) and high bar (9.10).
Fellow senior Andrew Digiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) posted the Wolverines' high score on his signature event, the vault (9.20), and Luke Bottke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) contributed a pair of solid scores on floor (8.75) and vault (8.75).
In the first collegiate meet of his career, Catrambone claimed fourth in the all-around (50.30) with high scores coming on vault (8.85) and high bar (8.90). Fellow freshman Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./ St. John Vianney HS) added solid depth on rings (8.60) and high bar (8.00), as did Scott Bregman (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State HS) on floor (8.85) and vault (8.85).
Sophomore Daniel Rais (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) notched two scores above 9.00 on floor (9.05) and vault (9.20), while junior Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS) led the team on rings (8.95) and was consistent on parallel bars (8.30) and high bar (8.65).
The Wolverines return to action next weekend in their home opener when they host preseason No. 5 Penn State on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 7:30 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
