EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team's second game in the MSU/Radisson Classic was a 3-1 loss to Massachusetts on Monday (Sept. 5) on Old College Field. The Wolverines finished the weekend 1-1 and are currently 2-1 for the season.
Statistically the Wolverines were the more dominant team, as Michigan had an attack on the net at all times, taking 26 shots, with 11 of them being on goal. Massachusetts goalkeeper Zack Simmons had a total of 11 saves and one goal against. The Minutemen took a total of eight shots, with four of them on goal. After back-to-back shutouts in the first two games, senior Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) finished the game with one save and allowed three goals.
The first goal of the day for Massachusetts came just 6:49 into the game, when Oral Bullen hooked up with Michael Donelly. The second goal was at the 18:00 mark, when Bullen was assisted by Stewart Wagner. The Wolverines' defense picked up, only allowing the Minutemen two more shots in the half. With 0:48 left before halftime, senior Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley) found the feet of junior Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller). Trybula passed it back to Bruh, spun toward the goal and started making a run, and Bruh then slipped it to him to shoot it past the goalie's right side.
After trailing 2-1 at intermission, the Wolverines came back in the second half determined to win. Not only did their defensive pressure get stronger, but their offensive pressure was also turned up a notch. The Wolverines took 10 shots in the second half, forcing Simmons to make six saves, one more than the first half. Michigan only allowed one shot on goal in the second half, and that was at the 78:42 mark, when Tony Bassett scored the Minutemen's third goal.
The Wolverines will host the Michigan Invitational from Friday through Sunday (Sept. 9-11) at the U-M Soccer Field. They will meet Louisville on Friday (Sept. 9) at 7 p.m. and Long Island on Sunday (Sept. 11) at 2 p.m.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "I can't complain about the effort. Our execution was pretty good, other than the final phase, which is putting the ball in the 'old onion bag' as they say."
On the lesson learned from this weekend ... "When you're in a hole, stop digging. And we did a good job with that -- we put ourselves in a hole and we stopped digging. They figured it out without timeouts, substitutions, and we started to climb back out of the hole."
On the expectations for the next game ... "We have some young players in the starting lineup as well as new players in the starting lineup. So, we just want to find our goal-scoring form. We understand that this takes some time."
