Last Year at the Lady Northern: Hosting U-M Wins Lady Northern by Four Shots
The Maize and Blue held onto its first day lead to win the 2004 Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 11-12) at the U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich., with an 881 54-hole tournament total. U-M opened with a 294 only to lower it with a 291 in the second round to sit tied atop the leaderboard with Missouri after Saturday's first two rounds. With the lead, the Wolverines totaled a 296 final round, holding off a charge from Ohio State to take home the program's second Lady Northern title in the last four years. After staying in contention for most of the tournament, former Wolverine Laura Olin (2002-05) tied for second overall with a career-best 54-hole tournament total of 219 (71-74-74), five strokes off the medalist Maria Ohlsson (75-66-73/214) of Missouri. Last Time Out: Schmucker, Broderick Lead Michigan at Fossum Invite
The Wolverines opened the 2005-06 season with a solid sixth play showing at the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18) at Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Maize and Blue recorded descending rounds throughout the 54-holes as they tallied a 914 tournament total after rounds of 309, 304 on Saturday and today's final round 301. Amy Schmucker led the Maize and Blue charge as she was 11th with a 223 54-hole total (74-76-73), while Brianna Broderick followed just a stroke behind her teammate as she was 12th with a 224 tournament total (78-72-74). Other Wolverines at the Mary Fossum included: Lindsay Davis, tied for 37th with a career-best 234 total (80-72-82); Ali Stinson, tied for 40th with a 235 total (77-84-74); Kelly Easton, tied for 73rd with a 250 total (86-84-80) and Rose Cassard, who competed as an individual, 78th with a 255 total (87-80-88).
Bri Keeps Going and Going
With her 12th-place finish at the 2005 Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-81), Brianna Broderick has finish among the top 15 in her last five tournaments dating back to last season. In fact, she has 15 top 20 finishes in her 25 career tournaments.
Schmucker Hits Mark Again
For the fourth time in her career, Amy Schmucker has finished as the top Wolverine in tournament. In fact, she has now recorded a top finish for the Maize and Blue in each of her four years. Most recently, she led at the 2005 Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18); as a junior she won her first collegiate tournament at the 2005 Central District Classic (Feb. 21-22); as a sophomore, she was part of three teammates sharing the top spot at the 2004 Lady Boilermaker (April 17-18) and in her first season and her first collegiate event, she was top Wolverine, along with Laura Olin, at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 14-15).
Second Round Highlights Davis' Opening Tournament
Lindsay Davis set a new career-best 54-hole total at the 2005 Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18) with 234 showing. Her previous best was a 237 total at the Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 4-5, 2004). En route to her career best total, she fired a career-best single round total with her even par 72 in the second round of the Mary Fossum. In the round, she recorded 14 pars and two birdies, which helped erase two bogeys in the round.
The Debut
After redshirting last season, Rose Cassard made her collegiate debut playing as an individual at the 2005 Mary Fossum Invitational. She was 78th with a 255 total (87-80-88).
Longevity Key to Success and Depth
By playing in the 2005 Mary Fossum Invitational, Amy Schmucker has played in 37 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue, while Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson have played in 25 straight tournaments. Last season, former Wolverine Laura Olin set the U-M record playing in 50 consecutive tournaments.
Successes Keep Coming
Since the start of the 2000 spring season, the Wolverines women's golf program has won or finish as the runner-up in 24 of 69 total events. In that span they have also been selected to four NCAA regional appearances and advanced to the 2002 NCAA Championships. In 2005, the Wolverines also recorded the program's highest finish at the Big Ten Championship with a second place showing.
Looking for the Fifth in Sixth
After being selected for an NCAA Regional four of the last five years, the Wolverines will be looking to make it five out of the last six with the start of the 2005-06 season. The Wolverines may have lost Laura Olin to graduation, but the Maize and Blue return four of five starters from a year ago and two All-Big Ten golfers in Brianna Broderick (first team) and Ali Stinson (second team).
Broderick Among Golf World's Top 50 Players to Watch
Brianna Broderick has been selected as one of Golf World's Top 50 Female Players to Watch in the Annual College Preview Report in the Sept. 9, 2005 issue. Broderick is one of just two Big Ten players recognized for Golf World listing as Purdue's Myrte Eikenaar also made the listing.
Take a Look at this Ranking
