Men's Swimmer Tarwater Takes Fourth at Worlds

MONTREAL, Quebec -- University of Michigan senior men's swimmer Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) finished fourth in the 200-meter butterfly on Wednesday (July 27) at the 2005 FINA World Championships, touching the wall in 1:56.74. Tarwater's time marked the second fastest 200-meter butterfly in Michigan history.
Tarwater started strong, moving into fourth at the midpoint of the race. With a split of 29.92 on the third 50 meters of the race, Tarwater briefly moved into third before falling back to fourth at the race's end.
Tarwater is the second Wolverine appear in the finals of an event at the World Championships. Senior Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) notched a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200-meter (1:47.25) and the 400-meter (3:47.83) freestyles. Both were Michigan long-course meter records.
Competition at the 2005 FINA World Championships will continue through Sunday (July 31).
