MONTREAL, Quebec -- University of Michigan senior men's swimmer Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) turned in his second sixth-place showing of the 2005 FINA World Championships on Tuesday (July 26), placing sixth in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:47.25.
Swimming in the eighth lane, Vanderkaay got off the blocks quickly but sat in a tie for fifth with Australia's Nicholas Sprenger after the first 50 meters of the race with an opening split of 25.30. Sprenger pulled away over the next 100 meters, building a 0.25-second lead on Vanderkaay heading into the final leg of the race. Vanderkaay charged over the final 50 meters but was unable to make up the gap, finishing in sixth by just 0.16 seconds.
U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps won the 200-meter freestyle, setting an American record with a time of 1:45.20. Phelps captured his second gold medal of the championships, beating out Australian Grant Hackett by nearly a second.
Vanderkaay's other sixth-place finish came in the 400-meter freestyle, posting a time of 3:47.83. Both his 200- and 400-meter freestyle times set Michigan all-time long-course meter records.
In the 200-meter butterfly semifinals, U-M senior Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) finished fourth in the first semifinal with a time of 1:57.16. He will swim in the final tonight (July 27) as the seventh seed.
Competition at the 2005 FINA World Championships will continue through Sunday (July 31).
