Vanderkaay Sixth in 400 Free at World Championships

MONTREAL, Quebec -- University of Michigan senior men's swimmer Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) led the U-M contingent on the first day of the 2005 FINA World Championships, placing sixth in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:47.83 Sunday (July 24).
Vanderkaay stormed off the blocks and sat in second after the first 100 meters of the race with a split of 54.39. Vanderkaay, however, slipped over the next 200 meters and sat in sixth with just two lengths remaining. He maintained that spot over the final 100 meters to take sixth overall.
Michigan was well represented in the 400-meter freestyle, with former Wolverine Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger HS) finishing 17th for Team Canada in 3:50.47 and U-M volunteer assistant Michael Phelps placing 18th, touching the wall in 3:50.53.
Phelps also helped the U.S. to a gold-medal finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay. Leading off the American relay, Phelps posted the fastest opening-leg split of 49.17 to join teammates Neil Walker, Nate Dusing and Jason Lezak in setting an American and World Championship record with a time of 3:13.77.
Competition at the 2005 FINA World Championships will continue through Sunday (July 31).
