ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's tennis players Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary) and Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) captured the doubles title during the first leg of the ITA Midwest Summer Circuit, which U-M hosted last Saturday through Monday (July 9-11) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverine tandem tore through the 32-team field, surrendering just 11 games in the four matches they competed in.
After drawing a bye in the opening round, Delicata and Streifler cruised to a pair of 8-1 victories over Megan LaMothe (Lake Superior St.) and Yumi Matsuto (Lansing C.C.), and Western Michigan's Carrie Jeanmaire and Malena Remynse. The U-M duo had a bit of a tougher challenge in the semifinals against Brooke Beier (Purdue) and Chelsea Nusslock (Wisconsin), winning 8-6 to advance to the championship match.
Delicata and Streifler proved that they were worthy of a No. 1 seed, easily defeating fifth-seeded Christian Tara (Wake Forest) and Barbara Zidek (William & Mary) by a score of 8-3 in the final.
The two Wolverines also advanced deep into the 64-player singles tournament. Streifler, the fifth seed in the bracket, defeated four straight opponents before falling to top-seeded Caitlin Burke of Wisconsin (6-0, 6-2) in the semifinals. Delicata, the No. 3 seed, won three straight matches before dropping a 7-6, 6-1 decision to Notre Dame's Katie Potts in the quarterfinals.
Delicata and Streifler join five other letterwinners returning for Michigan in 2005-06. Delicata, who will be a junior, holds career marks of 28-27 in singles and 51-25 in doubles. Streifler enters her final year of eligibility with career records of 63-28 in singles and 65-26 in doubles.
